According to the sources, Team New York for the Overwatch League will be called New York Excelsior – if a recent USPTO Trademark application was to be believed. According to Akshonesports.com, the application was filed on Oct. 2 by OWL NYC LLC Delaware.
Following that news, an ESPN report on Oct 5. suggests a USPTO filing by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment for the “Los Angeles Gladiators” trademark. The Kroenkes aren’t strangers to owning sports franchises as they are current owners of Barclays Premier League team Arsenal, NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and NBA’s Denver Nuggets.
Expect Korean-based LW Blue to form a bulk of Team New York’s roster following reports of Overwatch League New York slot holder, Sterling.VC acquiring the squad, leading to LW Blue opting out of OGN APEX Season 4. Last week, a trademark filing in Seoul suggest that Team Seoul will be called Seoul Dynasty while rumors are rife that Team London, made up of the players from Cloud9 KongDoo and GC Busan will be called London Spitfire.
Earlier today we reported that Team Boston will be called Boston Uprising. This follows earlier announcements of another Los Angeles-based team’s official name – Los Angeles Valiant – whose squad will primarily consist of players of Immortals.
The preseason for the Overwatch League starts December 6th at the Blizzard Arena in Los Angeles, California, with the first season starting on Wednesday, January 10th. Registration for the players closes on October 30th.
