Nintendo’s Craziest Idea For 2018 Involves Cardboard. Lots Of It.

The Big N that birthed Mario figured it coud one-up Google’s VR cardboard. How, you may ask? By letting you slot your Nintendo Switch into different assortments of cardboard like a piano, a fishing road, and a robot.

This new idea is called Nintendo Labo. Here’s the official quote from the presser we got:

Together with the Nintendo Switch console, the Nintendo Labo kits provide the tools and technology to make fun DIY creations, play games with your creations, and discover how Nintendo Switch technology shapes ideas into reality.

With each Nintendo Labo kit, inspired minds across all generations can transform modular sheets of cardboard – specially designed to interact with the Nintendo Switch console and Joy-Con controllers – into interactive creations called Toy-Con. From a piano to a motorbike, a robot and more, each Toy-Con comes to life when combined with the Nintendo Switch in different ways.”

Just watch the video below if you think we took some happy pills and making this stuff up.

Nintendo will be selling these cardboard packs on April 20 (in the US). You can buy two different sets of these Toy-Cons: the Variety Set for US$70 and the Robot Kit for US$80. The Variety Set features two Toy-Con RC Cars, a Toy-Con Fishing Rod, a Toy-Con House, a Toy-Con Motorbike and a Toy-Con Piano.

The Robot Kit lets you build an interactive robot suit with a visor, backpack and straps for your hands and feet, which you can then wear to assume control of a giant in-game robot. We’re just curious if these cardboard packs will be available outside of grey market purchasing means, because hot damn that robot kit is making my inner child go nuts and frothing in the mouth.

Expect to see YouTubers and influencers acting like morons with these and (most likely) inadvertedly destroy their kits/Switches because we’re sure as hell going to be bombarded with Nintendo Labo user vids. April’s looking like a very long month.
