Overwatch League: NYXL Remain Top

The New York Excelsior avoided a huge upset and the label of perennial chokers as they reverse-swept the brilliant Philadelphia Fusion to win the Overwatch League Stage 2 title match today. The Fusion who earlier today surprised everyone by defeating the heavily favored, Stage 1 champions London Spitfire in five sets were Stage 2’s surprise package as their late surge left the likes of Los Angeles Gladiators and Seoul Dynasty missing out the playoffs.

Clearly the team who enjoys the meta shift the most, the core of ShaDowburn, Neptuno, Fragi and Carpe were brilliantly supported by the prodigious  Eqo and Snillo since the start of Stage 2.  A very likeable team, they only played effectively, but managed to be one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the league as well thanks to their aggressive playstyle.

In the first match of the day, the Fusion went against London Spitfire who defeated them 4-0 the last two times they met. Eager to exact revenge and break the Korean-team duopoly in the title matches, the Fusion fell in Gibraltar before racing to a 2-1 lead thanks to really impressive displays on Nepal and Hanamura. The Spitfire hit back via timebank win on King’s Row but the Fusion were not to be denied of a finals spot as they shocked the world with a resounding win on Route 66 for a date with NYXL in the final.

Carrying on their momentum from the semis win on Route 66, the Fusion again flipped the form books as they won the opening map which was played on the same route. The NYXL had no reply to the Fusion’s aggressive approach as they also surrendered Lijiang Tower to trail 0-2 heading into the break.

But you can’t keep a good champion down as the NYXL, probably still haunted by Stage 1’s final loss (to London) rallied back to win the next two maps; Volskaya and Hollywood to force the fifth map – on Gibraltar. Having successfully stopping the Fusion payload at the last bend before Point C while on defense, the NYXL were rampant as they marched towards goal with the payload and walked home with a cool US$100,000 prize money.

Following today’s matches, the Overwatch League goes into a short break ahead of Stage 3 which kicks off April 5th 2018. But the action doesn’t stop as teams will be scrambling to sign new players and finalize trades as the window for such activities will shut before Stage 3 begin.
