PUBG Studio Is Suing Epic Games Over Fortnite

Just like how Riot Games is suing Moonton over their League of Legends clone for mobile, so too is PUBG’s studio PUBG Corp. suing Epic Games over Fortnite’s similar-looking mode (that’s free-to-play, by the by).

The lawsuit in question is about copyright infringement: it was filed in January but was made public this week. The South Korean publisher is claiming that Fortnite’s popular Battle Royale mode is copying PUBG’s interface and in-game items. When Epic launched their mode last September, the PUBG makers showed concerns “that Fortnite may be replicating the [PUBG] experience.”

The PUBG Corp. has done copyright infringement lawsuits before. A few months ago, it sued Chinese gaming publisher NetEase for its copyright claims in their mobile games Rules of Survival and Knives Out.

As an aside, PUBG runs using the Unreal game engine, which is made by Epic. Both companies have also received large sums of investments from China’s tech conglomerate Tencent.

We’ll say this: if the PUBG folks were to spend more time fixing and polishing their game and cleaning out the major bugs, they wouldn’t have many people flocking over to Fortnite. Clearly, Fortnite has more flair and higher production values compared to PUBG, though to be fair Fortnite was out years ago albeit without a Battle Royale mode.
