Detonator KR Crowned Overwatch Contenders Pacific Season 1 Champs
Korean-based Detonator KR has been crowned the first ever champions of Overwatch Contenders Pacific after defeating Australian-based Blank Esports at the Blizzard Arena in Taipei yesterday. Easily two of the most dominant teams in the OWC Pacific region, both teams didn’t drop a single set en route to the Grand Final.
Group A champions with a 5-0 record, Detonator KR steamrolled past their oppositions in the playoffs, defeating A Bang (TPE) and MEGA Esports (Tha) by 3-0 each to secure a spot in the Grand Finals. Their opponents, Blank Esports were equally impressive, also winning their group with a 5-0 record and defeating their quarter and semi final foes, Talon Esports and Hong Kong Attitude both 3-0.
The Grand Final was played on a best-of-seven ruleset which saw the Australians pull off a surprise early map win, dealing the Koreans their first ever map loss of the season by conquering Ilios 2-0. The Koreans hit back to tie the score with an overtime win on Numbani.
Unperturbed, the Australians rallied and dealt the Koreans their second map loss of the night with a very impressive display on Horizon Lunar Colony. But their joy was shortlived as the Koreans mounted an epic comeback, winning the next three maps – Dorado, Oasis and Hollywood to secure the win 4:2 and walk home with over US$30,000 prize money.
Season 2 of the Overwatch Contenders Pacific starts in about three weeks with the Overwatch Contenders Pacific Trials Season 2 which kicks off on May 25th to May 27th.
