AirAsia Is The Official Airline Partner For WESG 2018
AirAsia has been hinting a lot about its esports initiative, but now it can go full-on official with its involvement. During a press conference on Friday morning, representatives from the World Electronic Sports Games (or WESG) announced that it will be teaming up with Malaysia’s own low-cost airline services as its official airline partner for the upcoming WESG tournament this year and the next.
Keep in mind that WESG is an Alibaba initiative, so there’s a LOT of money riding into this.
The airline’s sponsorship deal with Agri Mind Sdn Bhd will provide flights, media value and cash prize in support of the region’s WESG events this season. This, in turn, will also allow the airline to help push the expansion of esports in Asia even further.

“In terms of esports enthusiasts,” said AirAsia executive chairman and AirAsia X Group CEO Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, “Asia is one of the fastest growing regions in the world with 9.3 million fans, a number expected to grow 36.1 per cent every year through to 2019. As an innovative digital company, we are thrilled to be the title sponsor and to contribute to esports by supporting Asean’s top professional esports athletes to compete at the global tournament.”
As the title sponsor, AirAsia’s brand will be integrated across WESG Asean’s digital platforms and tournaments.
The WESG Asian online registration in each country is opened from 1 June to 31 July. These 10 countries will run its own online tournaments followed by national finals (LAN) from 1 Aug to 30 September. To recap, the games used will be Dota 2, StarCraft II, Vainglory, Pro Evolution Soccer 2019, and CSGO.
The Asian Regional Grand Finals will be held in November 2018 and the International Grand Finals will be held in March next year. You can register here at sea.wesg.com/registration.
Previously, AirAsia made a deal to sponsor Mineski’s Dota 2 team, acquired Mobile Legends team AirAsia Saiyan, and planned to bring mobile esports games onboard its flights. It’ll be a matter of time until AirAsia announces a physical esports hub.
