1 Year Later, Riot Games Wins US$2.9M Lawsuit Against Mobile Legends Developer

It seems that Moonton is now US$2.9 million dollars poorer thanks to Riot Games and Tencent Holdings’ tenacity and persistence. The charges? Copyright infringement from Moonton’s part since their game Mobile Legends Bang Bang is essentially a League of Legends rip-off from aesthetics to gameplay.

If you’re lost, don’t worry: here’s a recap.

  • Riot Games sued the company Moonton initially last year. Riot said that it believes Moonton had earned hundreds of thousands—and possibly millions—of dollars by copying their game League of Legends.
  • However, the case was dismissed on grounds of forum non conviens. This means that the dismissal was due to another jurisdiction or court must hear the case more conveniently.
  • This is where the court of Shanghai comes into play, since Moonton is situated there.
  • Do remember that Riot Games is under Tencent Holdings. Which means that Tencent, a giant-ass Chinese conglomerate, can instead sue Moonton on their behalf. The new lawsuit from Tencent is a non-disclosure and non-compete lawsuit.

Okay, now that we’re done with the recap, let’s proceed with the story. According to Dot Esports, Moonton was supposed to pay just US$388,000 according to the official court document from Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court. However, the court ruled that the original settlement was incorrect.

Moonton used a valuation of the settlement based on how tax authorities calculate value instead of basing it on book values. Because of this, the figure jumped up to US$2.9 million.

To add more fuel to the fire, Tencent’s other MOBA King of Glory is joining forces with Riot to sue Moonton for additional copyright infringement cases. With Mobile Legends and League of Legends being super-popular here in Malaysia and Singapore, you don’t need us to tell you that the games are eerily similar to one another.
