Octopath Traveler Guide: How To Be Well-Prepared For This JRPG Epic
By Team KKP|July 14, 2018|2 Comments
These values are basically the dungeon’s rating. If it’s 10, that means that heroes who are lower than level 10 by a huge margin should not enter lest they get trashed quick. The higher the Danger Level, the more rewards you can find. The game will scale up in accordance to your party.
Yes, Octopath Traveler brings in dual-classes ala D&D, but in its own way. Halfway in the game, you’ll get to assign secondary jobs to your characters.
Here’s a handy chart that determines the bonuses a character gets when taking on a secondary job (via Shacknews).
Say you start off with Primrose the dancer. She has little HP so she’ll die really quick in a head-on melee fight. To buff her up, she can take on the Warrior secondary job to get bonuses for her Max HP, Physical Attack, and Physical Defense. Coincidentally, you can have warrior Olberic take on the Hunter secondary job to get more Physical Attack bonuses and some Accuracy & Critical points to boot. Essentially you can Min/Max your heroes as you see fit.
Our advice? If you can’t decide, just go for the Merchant secondary job. Getting that HP and SP bonus boost means that your heroes can live longer and pull off more SP attacks/buffs in the long run.
The secondary class and job shrine locations are as listed below:
This little trick is based on the idea of using Tressa to wander around the Undertow Cave (head east from Rippletide, Tressa’s starting point) until you find this hill, then head around back and press down to enter the cave. Note it is danger level 45. That doesn’t really matter though. After some testing while trying to follow another guide that uses Tressa’s passive ability to “find” money left behind while wandering around this cave, I noticed I didn’t actually find much inside the cave. I did, however, get a nice chunk of change every time I LEFT the cave.
I did some testing, and realized that Tressa will find some money every time she leaves the cave, and the amount found is determined by the ground covered inside the cave. What I discovered is that the cave is divided into zones, and as long as you touch a zone, you earn the cash bonus for traversing it. It does not matter how long you are in the cave, only that you touch the zones.
The first mandatory support skill for this is “Evasive Maneuvers”, via Cyrus or the Scholar secondary job. The second most important support skill is “Evil Ward”, via Ophilia or someone with the Cleric job. If you’re paranoid, you can also use “Heighten Senses” via H’aanit or another hunter. This isn’t mandatory, just a safety net. For more paranoia, or if you’re going to try to cover even more ground, you can use “Percipience”. Also not mandatory, but an additional safety net.
As soon as you enter the cave, head down and left. Walk just far enough to touch the next “zone” on the left, where the ground color slightly changes, just past the stairs.
Head right, then down to touch the floor on the next level, then back up and to the right.
Head up and right.
Go just far enough down the stairs to touch the lower level, then head back up.
Done! You’ve maximized the “zones” touched in a short period of time. Head back up and out the way you came into the cave. You’ll get a nice chunk of pocket change.
Once you’ve seen the first end credit scroll of the game, you can access a major dungeon. Mild spoilers will follow after this warning.
This dungeon is called the Ruins of Hornberg and it is filled with really tough bosses, a shadow boss gauntlet where you cannot take breaks in-between the 8 final boss fights, and some more info about the game’s lore. Sounds like fun! Here’s how you can unlock it:
Get through all four chapters of all eight stories. You’ll know you did this when there are no character icons left on your map.
Go to the city of Bolderfall and head to Ravus’ Manor, where you’ll find a guard named Alphas. Duel him with Olberic or H’aanit to finish the first part of the quest.
Then, make your way to Saintsbridge, where you’ll find Alphas moping and writing poetry. Use Alfyn or Cyrus’s path actions to learn his poem, then bring it to a lady named Flora in the cathedral section of Saintsbridge.
Kit, a naive blond boy, is one of the first non-player characters you’ll meet in the game. You’ll run into him right after leaving your first city, and he’ll ask you for a healing grape. Give it to him.
Then, later, you’ll want to track him down in the city of Noblecourt. One screen to the right, you’ll find an NPC called “Aspiring Actor”.Use Ophilia or Primrose’s path actions to bring this NPC to Kit and you’ll solve the first part of the quest.
Next, you need to go to Grandport and find the travelling merchant who’s promising rare gems and goods (right outside of the inn and items stores). Use Therion or Tressa to get the Lapis Lazuli from him, then bring it to Kit, who will now be hanging out on the Moonstruck Coast.
Finally, go to West S’warki Trail and find the Impresario. You’ll fight an easy mini-boss and then you’ll unlock the final dungeon: the Ruins of Hornburg.

[…] While it’s fun to solve main and side quests by figuring out which path action is the best, it does lead to some interesting conundrums. Narratively-speaking, is it less honourable to beat up a peasant with a Challenge path action or sic your pets onto him via the Provoke path action? The consequence of using Rogue path actions too aren’t as severe if you don’t mind grinding for money. And in a JRPG like this, there are quite a number of exploits for doing the leveling up/coin up grind especially if you have certain Job passive skills like Tressa’s Eye For Money buff. […]
