Overwatch World Cup: USA, Canada Breeze Through LA Qualifiers
By KakuchopureiVerified|September 11, 2018|0 Comment
Two North American giants team USA and 2017 Overwatch World Cup Runners-Up Canada breezed their way to the final eight stage of the 2018 Overwatch World Cup as both teams brushed aside pretenders at the Los Angeles Group Stages last weekend. Coming in as the highest rank North American team since the USA are considered as hosts, the star-studded Canadian team which had Surefour, XQC, Agilities and Bani didn’t have much trouble navigating through the likes of Australia, Brazil, Norway and Switzerland, winning all of their matches without surrendering a map.
It was great to see the Canadians’ main tank, Felix ‘XQC’ Lengyel back on the main stage as he rampaged through the opponents’ backlines but the play of the weekend was surely Agilities’ quad-boop on Rialto against team Austria.
The single greatest Lucio play in the entirety of Overwatch history.
Flexing in as Lucio, DPS superstar Agilities uses sound barrier on himself to guarantee the double dip boop off play to kill 4 by himself.

Meanwhile, the home team which is also stacked with Overwatch League players such as Sinatraa, Moth, Space and Rawkus also had an easy weekend, save for that minor scare when they dropped a map against the plucky Brazilians. However, their spot at the World Cup knockout stages was sealed when they came across their northern neighbors in the final match of the qualifiers.
Dealing the Canadians their first ever map losses in the qualifiers after wins on Oasis and King’s Row, the USA team kept their cool despite the Canadians pulling one back with a win on Temple of Anubis. Team Canada’s hopes of eclipsing their flashier neighbors were however dashed as the Americans pushed the payload further on Rialto, dealing the Canadians their first loss at the Overwatch World Cup, and securing the top seed coming out of the Los Angeles Qualifiers.
Next, six teams – China, Australia, Sweden, Denmark and Spain visit Bangkok, Thailand for the third leg of the 2018 Overwatch World Cup Group Stage. Easily the most interesting 2018 Overwatch World Cup qualifying stage on our books, the Thailand stage will see the likes of Custa, Mickie, Kellex, Harryhook, Tviq and Snillo take stage. The highest-ranked country, China will attempt to salvage some pride on the pro Overwatch scene by qualifying after their country’s sole representative at the inaugural season of the Overwatch League finished with a 0-40 record while Thailand would want to avoid the embarrassment of being the first host nation to miss out on qualification.
If you’re in Bangkok, head over to the Royal Paragon Hall (5th floor, Siam Paragon) from September 14 to 16 (10am – 7pm) to catch all the action live alongside a ton of other Overwatch-related fan activities. For more info, head over here.
