20th Century Fox To Create Live-Action Mega Man Movie, But Why?
By Mr Toffee|October 4, 2018|2 Comments
With Mega Man 11 already out this week, it’s only fitting we get a live-action movie announcement to capitalize on the hype that’s only emanating from old-school Mega Man and Capcom fans.
In a startling announcement, Capcom announced that the Mega Man IP will be adapted into a live-action Hollywood film for the first time.
The title of the film is tentatively Mega Man, and it will be written and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, with distribution handled by 20th Century Fox. The duo of Henry and Ariel’s previous works include Paranormal Activity 3, Nerve, and Paranormal Activity 4, so you know the sci-fi IP is in good hands.
Chernin Entertainment will produce it with Masi Oka, whom you might remember being shark bait in this year’s shark week film The Meg. Which begs the question: why is this happening?
Because Capcom aims to appeal to a diverse audience, including both game players and action movie fans. The company promises to create an adaptation that “maintains the world of the Mega Man games while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for.”
So we’re getting disappearing blocks, spiked pits with one-hit kills, and eight different-themed stages and levels in Hollywood glory, eh? There’s no release date for now, but honestly, I’m not holding my breath. Unless you’re a fan of the Resident Evil films by Paul W.S Anderson and his beau Milla Jovovich, there’s really no way to get excited or disappointed by these turn of events. Capcom’s gotta make money somehow outside of sequels, right?
On that note, Mega Man 11 is out now; our review should be up soon. In the meantime, tide yourself over with our picks of best and worst Mega Man games of all time.
