[Report] Microsoft Will Buy “Pillars of Eternity” Devs Obsidian Entertainment
Obsidian Entertainment, the folks behind really fun-if-buggy experiences like Fallout: New Vegas and classic CRPG fares like the Pillars of Eternity series, may be backed by a bigtime publisher soon. Like, a REALLY big one.
According to Kotaku sources, Microsoft is finalizing a deal to acquire the independent development studio. Sources close to both companies said that the deal is more or less sealed.
“[I heard] it was 90% finished,” said one of the sources. Another source said “it’s a matter of when, not if.”
Classic Microsoft said the following; “we do not comment on rumours or speculation,” while Obsidian themselves quipped the situation in their own special way: “Unfortunately, we don’t comment on rumours or speculation other than to say that the Rumors album by Fleetwood Mac still holds up.”
This move makes sense for both parties. Obsidian Entertainment had developed a slew of hit games but was in a financial rut pre-Pillars of Eternity. Microsoft and its Xbox division recently snapped up four game studios which include Playground and Ninja Theory.
Obsidian and Microsoft weren’t on good terms before due to the latter’s cancellation of Stormlands back in 2012. With Xbox’s new leadership courtesy of Phil Spencer, it plans to mend that burnt bridge and create a possibly CRPG-laden future for the Xbox platform as a long overdue counterattack to Sony PlayStation’s dominance this current generation.
