Obi-Wan Kenobi Cast as Black Mask in DC’s Birds of Prey
By Alleef Ashaari|November 2, 2018|0 Comment
It looks like Obi-Wan Kenobi is leaving behind the Jedi code and turning to the Dark side by becoming a crime lord in Gotham city. Deadline reported earlier today that Ewan McGregor (who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels fans love to hate) will be joining the upcoming DC’s Birds of Prey movie as the iconic DC Comics‘ villain Black Mask.
The Birds of Prey movie will also star Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn from 2016’s Suicide Squad, Mary Elizabeth Winstead AKA Ramona Flowers as Huntress, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. In the comics, Birds of Prey is a popular all-female superhero group originally formed by Black Canary and Barbara Gordon AKA Batgirl, with later additions like Huntress, Vixen, and more.
For those unfamiliar with Black Mask, he’s a ruthless crime lord/mob boss named Roman Sionis with a penchant for masks and torture. He’s traditionally been part of Batman’s rogues’ gallery, although not as immediately iconic as other crime lord villains like the Penguin or Two-Face.
That’s probably because he looks like Marvel’s Red Skull, except with a black mask (groan) instead of a red one. Gamers may recognize him from the Batman Arkham series.
Additionally, Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan has also recently confirmed that the movie will be R-rated and will feature the live-action debut of Cassandra Cain. Cain was one of the more underrated Batgirls, and the character currently goes by the name of Orphan in the comics.
Birds of Prey is slated to release on February 7, 2020.
