Netflix Announces New Asian Originals, Including Anime Spinoffs of Pacific Rim and Altered Carbon

We’ve seen a lot of locally-spiced content from the folks at Netflix, including (but not limited to) the recent Indonesian action movie The Night Comes For Us, Indian crime thriller Sacred Games, and anime Devilman Crybaby. Today, at the company’s first ever content showcase in Asia, the streaming giant announced an incredible 17 new original productions from Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and South Korea, as well as an additional 9 projects from India.

Viewers can look forward to no less than five new exclusive anime projects. These include:

  • Pacific Rim – Produced by Legendary Entertainment, this anime series will expand upon the existing two Pacific Rim movies. It follows a teenage boy and his sister who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger mecha in a journey to find their missing parents.
  • Altered Carbon – Produced by Anima studio, this animated feature film will share the same universe as the Netflix live-action sci-fi series of the same name. Co-written by Dai Sato of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo fame, it will explore new elements of the story and lore.
  • Cagaster of an Insect Cage – Produced by Gonzo studio, this anime series based on the manga of the same name follows a young couple struggling to stay alive in a post-apocalyptic world where a mysterious disease called “Cagaster” turns people into giant murderous insects.

  • Yasuke – Produced by MAPPA studio, this anime series follows a retired ronin who must once again take up his sword when he is charged with transporting a mysterious child wanted by dark forces. It is set in a warring feudal Japan with elements of mech and magic.
  • Trese – Produced by BASE Entertainment studio, this anime series is set in Manila, Philippines, where mythical beings from Philippine folklore live in hiding amongst humans. The story follows the protagonist Alexandra Trese as she collides with a supernatural criminal underworld.

Additionally, other Asian Originals include two Thai-language live-action series; The Stranded and The Shimmer, alongside a Chinese-language Taiwanese live-action series Triad Princess.

Besides that, Netflix has also revealed an exclusive clip from the upcoming Narcos: Mexico Mano a Mano, a Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle trailer (with a release date), and a release date for Season 1 of Kingdom (January 25, 2019). Last but not least, Day One of Netflix’s See What’s Next Asia event ended with the announcement of a Season 2 renewal of Kingdom ahead of its Season 1 debut.
