Starkiller: EA Cancels Open-World Star Wars Game

Remember that 2017 Star Wars game that was in development at EA’s Vancouver office that was announced around the same time Dead Space devs Visceral Games got the sack? Yeah, that’s apparently cancelled according to sources close to Kotaku.

The game was apparently an open-world title that was in production since October 2017. Right after Visceral Games was shut down while they were making the linear action adventure Star Wars game directed by Uncharted’s Amy Hennig, codenamed Ragtag, the Vancouver studio took over the project. From there on, they repurposed it, reused its assets, and made it an open-world game instead.

Here’s a breakdown of the game and why it was cancelled:

  • The project, codenamed Orca, was about a bounty hunter who could explore various open-world planets and worked with different factions across the Star Wars universe.
  • While the project looked admirable and ambitious, EA’s top brass decided that the company needed something earlier than the planned release date for Orca, right after looking at the company road map for the next few years.
  • Because of this, they cancelled Orca and decided to task the team to work on a smaller-scale Star Wars project aimed for late 2020 or earlier.
  • Coincidentally, this is the same time next-generation consoles from Xbox and PlayStation may come out.
  • Thankfully, the publisher did not lay off anyone after the project was cancelled. In fact, some folks were hopeful that Orca might be restarted after the new project was finished.

That is sad news, but at least we may be getting a new Star Wars action game made out of different parts of a previous in-concept game later in 2020. A Frankenstein’s monster of a Star Wars game, if you will.
