The Next MCU Spider-Man Film Trailer Just Swung By: Here’s What We Thought
By Alleef Ashaari|January 15, 2019|0 Comment
The first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home has dropped thanks to the efforts of Tom Holland, which is set to give us a glimpse of a post-Avengers: Endgame Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Let’s check out what’s in the highly-anticipated trailer, shall we?
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUFmhKpZKlE&w=560&h=315]
The Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer begins with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) attending a fundraiser for the homeless and less fortunate, which kind of reminds me of the F.E.A.S.T. shelter from Insomniac’s Spider-Man PS4 game. It also confirms what we already know from Spider-Man: Homecoming’s ending, as May now knows that Peter is Spider-Man.
We then see Happy Hogan (Tony Stark’s best friend and former driver) arriving late to the scene with a massive cheque for half a million dollars in hand. He then proceeds to openly flirt with Aunt May, making Peter uncomfortable. MayGan or HappAy, anyone?
The next few scenes feature Peter gearing and preparing for a trip overseas to Europe, buying toiletries and picking up his passport. He then ultimately decides not to bring his suit, which already seems to be a bad idea. “Europe doesn’t need a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man,” said Peter.
Peter travels to Europe with his friends, including MJ (Zendaya), Ned (Jacob Batalon), Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori), and Betty Brant (Hemky Madera). Their first stop seems to be Venice.
In their hotel room, Peter and Ned get ambushed by someone and it surprisingly turns out to be Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). It certainly seems like Fury has a mission intended for Peter. Man, heroes can’t even take vacations in peace anymore. Peter’s new black-ish suit must have been given to him by Fury, which is the most likely theory considering he didn’t bring his own suit.
My first guess would’ve been Spider-Man’s iconic foe, Sandman, but it’s not. Marvel Studios has already confirmed that the Elementals will be making their live-action debut in Spider-Man: Far From Home. If that’s true, then this is actually Magnum, who has the ability to manipulate earth, minerals, and rock.
This cloud of smoke and ash might be the work of none other than Zephyr, another member of the Elementals, who has the ability to control air and many of its aspects.
That’s probably Hellfire, the leader of the Elementals, who has the ability to, you guessed it, generate flames at will.
Our first look at Spidey’s new stealth suit, which seems to have been inspired by the iconic Spider-Man Noir (who is now instantly recognizable thanks to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse).
And here we have the last of the Elementals to appear in the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer; Hydro-Man or Hydron, who has the ability to control water. Peter looks to be severely outmatched here, especially without his suit. And who comes to the rescue? Is it any of the Avengers?
Nope, it’s this guy; Quentin Beck AKA Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). What comes next is weird, especially if you’re familiar with the character. When did Mysterio ever have the ability to fire green energy beams and fly on green wisps of smoke like Goku on his Nimbus cloud? The most obvious answer would be that he’s in cahoots with the Elementals and that this is all an elaborate illusion. He’s the master of illusion, special effects and (at times) hypnosis, so it’s entirely in the realm of possibility.
The final scene in the trailer must be the direct aftermath of that Spider-Man Mysterio team-up, as Peter and his friends look upon the local news where the Venetian media are already calling the new ‘hero’, Misterio or Mysterio.
My final thoughts: I may not like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man much, but this Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer is really making me hyped. The state of the MCU post-Avengers: Endgame remains clouded in mystery, and while the trailer doesn’t reveal anything much on that front, I’m still looking forward to seeing Spidey’s European exploits. Well, that, and the multitude of new never-before-seen villains like Mysterio and the Elementals, of course!
What do you think of the first Spider-Man Far From Home trailer? Let me know in the comments below. Spider-Man: Far From Home is slated to arrive in cinemas sometime in July 2019.
