Major Thailand Game Studio Shuts Down After 15 Years

It’s always sad to see a game company finally doing something noteworthy after 15 years or so paying their dues doing shovelware & low-key games, only to have reality set in to kill off your dreams and hopes. Such is the case of Sanuk Games.
According to a Facebook post from the company’s CEO and founder Yan Marchal, the company will be shutting its doors after 15 years of business due to “business setbacks and a lack of foreseeable opportunities in the short term.” That noteworthy project they were working on? It’s a video game version of boardgame Mythic Battles: Pantheon which looked like a promising turn-based pantheon god-influenced game.
The Kickstarter project was cancelled recently prior to this news. The project garnered S$19,291 out of the S$153,391 required, 383 backers, and had 20 days to go.
Yan plans to do a post mortem about the company in the near future, possibly after his time in this year’s Game Developer Conference. He also plans to continue making indie games while looking for employment and consultation opportunities.
Sanuk Games was established in 2004 in Thailand and had a publishing arm in France. The company has shipped more than 70 games for clients such as Activision, Eidos Interactive, Mindscape, Sony, and Ubisoft, with titles such as Tetraminos, Dogz, Catz, and Star Wars Episode III: Activity Centre.
