Marvel Studios has practically confirmed that a Black Widow movie is in development, with Scarlett Johansson set to reprise the lead role and Cate Shortland signing up as director. We initially didn’t know what to expect from this movie but now that we’ve seen Avengers Endgame, that has changed.
Natasha Romanoff is currently dead in the MCU, so a prequel would be the most likely prospect. Of all six founding members of the Avengers, Hawkeye and Black Widow are the least-explored characters in terms of backstory and origin, so there’s a lot of content to mine from there.
Marvel could explore the five years that Black Widow was in charge of the Avengers as seen in Avengers Endgame, or even further into the past to when she was still an assassin for the Red Room. Maybe we’ll even finally learn what exactly happened in Budapest.
No release date has been revealed for Black Widow as of yet.
