Capcom’s Resident Evil Lead & Bandai Namco’s Tekken Boss Talk About PS5 Stuff

According to a recent interview on Japan’s Weekly Famitsu (via Twinfinite), Capcom’s Head of Consumer Games Developer Division 1/Resident Evil lead Jun Takeuchi and Bandai Namco’s newly-appointed General Manager (and still Tekken boss) Katsuhiro Harada was asked to give their thoughts about PlayStation’s next-generation console.

These range from their expectations as developers and producers, and ideas generated by what most of us know of the PS5. The interview starts off with Takeuchi mentioning these points:

  • He feels that Sony is serious about improving the user experience with the PS5.
  • The shorter load times offered by the system’s high-bandwidth SSD and its efficient use of memory will contribute to reducing the time users spend waiting for their games to load.
  • Action games will especially be improved thanks to processing and storage speeds. He wishes to make new content that can take advantage of that performance.
  • He would also like to push the virtual reality technology in Resident Evil 7 one step further into more realistic experiences.

The other half of the interview then focuses on Harada’s input.

  • As a hardcore PC gamer, he guessed that the console would have a fast custom-made SSD that would also be cost-efficient, with bandwidth wider than a PC.
  • The console’s solid-state storage and cache will be reminiscent of the arcade board era of the 80s and 90s where game data was light and chips were based on ROM and RAM.
  • Harada’s main focus regarding the PS5 is on development efficiency. He said that it’s possible to save time while creating background data and other baked data via ray-tracing.
  • He also sees 3D audio as a welcome element for a home console in order to enrich the experience and the immersion. He would personally like to make use of the feature for people with visual handicaps with functions that enhance the perception of the interface and gameplay.
  • As a gamer, he wishes for a sharp gameplay experience with hardware that users can install in their own room. 
  • He also wishes VR tech would be more user-friendly. It’s not just about specs but about convenience and fast frame rates.
