E3 2019: The Kakuchopurei Team On Their Most-Anticipated Games

E3 2019 is over and done with; there’s a ton of video game reveals and some locked-down release dates for anticipated titles for this year and the next.

So, which games deserve the coveted Kakuchopurei Best of E3 Gold Star award which we just made up on the spot for this feature? Let’s find out!

Halo: Infinite

Yes, the reveal was hardly a surprise, and yes – Halo isn’t so hot right now especially coming off the mediocre Guardians. But Master Chief is back in his classic, Mjolnir Mark V armor and I am looking forward to seeing him cap off his second trilogy with a flourish. While I am a tad disappointed we didn’t get to catch any glimpse of gameplay from the Microsoft presser, I have high hopes thanks to the positive vibes Infinite has given me so far.

And if you need convincing on whether to pick up Project Scarlet? Infinite should help sway that decision in Microsoft’s favor.

What a way to finish Chief’s fight – via Xbox’s newest chapter.

Breath of the Wild Sequel

Hands up for the best game on the Switch, period and again for its sequel. While I’m always skeptical when it comes to E3 game reveals which only show a short snippet of a cinematic trailer, Nintendo earned that right to do so thanks to the brilliance of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The yet-to-be-named sequel looks as if it carried on from where the first game left off so expect another system seller coming your way next year.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Everyone deserves a chillax title and in my books – it’s the Animal Crossing series. It may come as a surprise to you but I recall I plonked over 600 hours into New Leaf on my old 3DSXL. It was that fun.

The Switch is in dire need of an Animal Crossing game and based on what we’ve seen so far, New Horizons will serve equally as a nostalgic return for hardcore fans, and a great introduction to newbies who first dipped their toes into the cult of Animal Crossing via Pocket Camp on mobile.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake Cloud Tifa

The biggest undisputed highlight of E3 2019 for me was the gameplay reveal of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Square Enix stole the show, shutting up every naysayer who has been increasingly skeptical of the highly-anticipated game over the years.

I’ve never actually played the original Final Fantasy VII, and I may never do so. However, that fact actually makes me more hyped for the Final Fantasy VII Remake since I’ll be able to experience one of history’s most iconic JRPGs remade for the current generation.

The gameplay looks like a more refined version of the one in 2016’s Final Fantasy XV, and I can already see that the everything else (like spells and abilities) are going to be much better implemented in this game compared to that flawed title.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition

Dragon Quest 11 Ensemble 2

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of An Elusive Age was my personal choice for game of the year in 2018. In my review for the original PS4 version, I even dubbed it the best JRPG experience of the current games generation. It was almost perfect, polishing and perfecting decades of JRPG tropes in one ultimate title.

While I’ve already sunk in hundreds of hours in the PS4 version (and obtained the Platinum trophy in the process), the sheer amount of improvements and content additions in Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition has made me salivating for the game’s eventual release for the Nintendo Switch.

This is the game that finally convinced me to want to purchase a Nintendo Switch. Nuff said.

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order

It’s been so long since the last great Star Wars game that I was beginning to give up on the franchise after the disappointment that was the last few Star Wars Battlefront games by EA. That’s why the surprise announcement of a new single-player Star Wars finally reignited a new hope for me.

From the gameplay reveal, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order looks like what a Star Wars The Force Unleased 3 could have been, albeit with Soulsborne-like lightsaber combat and weird third-person wall-climbing/wall-running mechanics that seem to be ripped from the Uncharted/Prince of Persia franchises.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered

Cover

There’s a reason why I said that Final Fantasy VIII was the best in the series, and here’s the secret.

I grew up playing most of the Final Fantasy games, and my first experience in the entire convoluted series is Final Fantasy VIII. In fact, I think my first ever game in my entire life was Final Fantasy VIII, or Cavedog’s revolutionary RTS game Total Annihilation. So it’s established that this game has a special place in my heart and mind.

When I heard the game is coming back after 20 years of silence, I was stoked beyond belief. I’ll finally get to relive my first game on a proper console with better graphics, hopefully with updated music as well.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake Aerith

I think it’s clear by now that I am a Final Fantasy fan, and if you’ve been following my writeups, I did mention that the 8th iteration is the best in the series. That might be changing soon.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is raising the bar with its brand new combat system and stunning visuals. The story is extraordinary, and the iconic characters have made their way into the hearts of gamers worldwide. Everybody knows how the tale of 1st Class Soldier, Cloud Strife, will end, yet everyone is still looking forward anxiously to this game.

The only thing that is giving me doubts is the pricing and the episodic releases. We’ll see how many episodes Square Enix decides to release in the future.

Ghostwire Tokyo

Here’s an unexpected reveal during Bethesda’s slot. With the adorable and enthusiastic creative director, Ikumi Nakamura taking the stage, she revealed what is a spooky game that takes place in Tokyo. Tons of people are disappearing, and mysterious figures are popping up, including one Hawkeye.

The game is technically Avengers: Infinity War, but with more wars and infinite questions.

Doom Eternal

Doom_eternal_fight

Doom (2016) was my personal pick for one of my few GOTYs of its time because it combined the frenetic shooting of Quake with the outlandish sci-fi hellscape and monster battle arenas of Doom and Doom II.

Doom Eternal will be delivering way more gunplay and way more action, but with a grappling hook, a giant demon-busting sword, an air dash ala Mega Man X, and a shoulder-mounted sidearm. And it’s slated for this year too!

Songs Of Conquest

songs_of-conquest

I loved Heroes of Might & Magic when it wasn’t in 3D. I didn’t mind the original Settlers on PC. This game seems to combine both elements from those games but with a nifty magic system to work with. I can dig that.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 Pacifist Run

I’ll say this: Cyberpunk 2077 is a sci-fi gamer’s wet dream with its gritty dystopian corporation-controlling landscape and its amoral factions and characters. However, CD Projekt Red may have the monumental task of upstaging The Witcher 3 by balancing its hugely-layered narrative with action-packed RPG gameplay.

As long as the team doesn’t pull off a Red Dead Redemption 2 where it skews way too much into story and cinematics land, I’m good.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

The Legend Of Zelda Links Awakening E3 (7)

I didn’t play the Game Boy version that much, because I already had A Link To The Past, and that’s all I needed. Little did I know that Link’s Awakening was more than a “shallow dumbed-down portable” version of a Legend of Zelda game. Thankfully, with this really cute-looking miniaturized-esque remake with its top-down RPGing and 2D combat, I’ll eat my words and play this remastered lost treasure in its coloured and dream-state glory.

Man, them face pores….

In all seriousness, I’d like to see how the Square Enix team adapt the original bats*** crazy story. That’s saying a lot considering we’re dealing with a series known for its heroes being made out of dreams, clowns turned world destroyers, and mythical creatures that can transform your rare Magic The Gathering-like game cards into a lot of Megalixirs.

Collection of Mana, That Borderlands 2 DLC, Cadence of Hyrule

These three are also my favourite E3 2019 things, but they’re out already so I’ll be talking about them in great detail in the near future.

Let us know your favourite E3 2019 picks either on this website or on our awesomesauce Facebook page.
