Final Fantasy XIV TV Series Coming Soon By Netflix’s The Witcher Studio

Sony Pictures Television and Hivemind Entertainment have announced that they will be working with Square Enix to develop a Final Fantasy XIV TV series, which will be the first-ever live-action adaptation of any title in the long-running and iconic JRPG game franchise.

Hivemind Entertainment is best known for producing Amazon’s brilliant The Expanse (one of the best modern sci-fi TV series out there) and the upcoming Netflix’s The Witcher TV series starring Henry Cavill of DCEU Superman fame.

According to the series overview (via Gematsu), the Final Fantasy XIV TV series will “tell an original story set in the fantastic world of Eorzea”, where it will “explore the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict”.

The press release also mentions that the Final Fantasy XIV TV series will feature series hallmarks like magitek and beastmen, airships and chocobos, as well as the live-action debut of Cid, a character who has appeared in almost every Final Fantasy game to date.

It’s still in early development stages, so none of the cast members or official release date/window have been announced. We don’t even know which network or streaming service the Final Fantasy XIV TV series will even be premiering on.

Final Fantasy fans will know that there’s already been one live-action series featuring the franchise in the past, though it wasn’t an adaptation of an existing game. The Final Fantasy XIV: Dad of Light TV series premiered in 2017, where a father and son rekindle their bond through playing the MMORPG together and it’s supposedly based on a true story.

The entire first season of Final Fantasy XIV: Dad of Light is currently available on Netflix right now. Check out the trailer for that below.
