Keiji Inafune’s Back With A New Game About Dragons & Colonies

The legendary Keiji Inafune, best known for designing Capcom’s Mega Man and working on every game in the franchise up to Mega Man 10, has returned with a new game after the disastrous failure of his last major game, Mighty No. 9. Now he’s working on a mobile game.

Developed by Level-5 Comcept, Inafune’s new game is titled Dragons & Colonies, which has been described as a ‘gatcha colonies battle RPG’. Its unique concept is that players will be able to manage their own kingdom on a ‘Hacolony’, which is what the game calls its signature digital cubes (the five sides on which the kingdom is built on).

The gatcha element comes in when players want to obtain new characters, creatures, and items to use in Dragons & Colonies. As with many RPGs, the game will somehow also include cooking mechanics of some sort.

In an interview with 4Gamer (as translated by Siliconera), Inafune said that his team was able to accomplish every element contained in the original design plan thanks to support by Level-5 president Akihiro Hino and a lengthy delay.

According to Inafune, the main concept for the game didn’t even come from him. It was only when a staff member suggested cube-shaped worlds that the game came together. The battles and Box Colony customization are key elements of the gameplay, so much so that Inafune claims that proper positioning of the facilities in the player’s kingdom will allow even gardeners to defeat heavily-armored enemies.

Unlike other mobile games, Inafune and his team settled on making the game playable vertically on mobile devices instead of horizontally. This is because the staff believes that more players could enjoy the game in more situations that way and that its RTS elements are better-suited for vertical play anyways.

Last but not least, Inafune and his team already have the first three months of content planned for Dragons & Colonies, so players don’t have to worry about getting bored with the game.

Dragons & Colonies is set to release in Japan sometime in June 2019 for Android and iOS devices. No release date has been revealed for an international release as of yet. In the meantime, check out the trailer for the game below.
