Capcom Shareholder Knows Nothing About Video Games, To No One’s Surprise

Holding meetings with shareholders and investors is part and parcel of running a company, and the games industry is no different. If you think the shareholders in video game companies are any different than those in more conventional ones, they’re usually the same old crusty folks who almost always have no idea how things really work in their own companies.

The most recent case of this was revealed by Niko Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad who shared snippets of questions from a particularly-clueless Capcom shareholder during a company meeting last month.

The Capcom shareholder started his inane barrage of questions with:

“My son is fervent online game player but says that Capcom’s graphics are unsophisticated. Please do something about this.”

The Capcom management team proceeded to answer with the most standard and vague corporate-sounding reply, stating that they value his (and his son’s) opinion and that it has collected “feedback” from players to improve on the matter.

What games have this kid even been playing? Titles like the Resident Evil 2 Remake and Devil May Cry 5 have all featured some of the best graphics around. From the sound of “fervent online gamer”, it;’s likely that Fortnite is all this kid ever plays anyways.

The shareholder’s next question was:

“Regarding Arcade Operations, when my son was younger, arcade trading-card games were popular, generating long lines to play.

I would really like to see a comeback for arcades as a family entertainment option.

I want you to invent an explosive, hit arcade machine.”

That’s exactly what we need. More explosive hit arcade machines in a world where games can be played almost everywhere on smartphones, portable devices, and home consoles. It’s not like we still live in the 80s, right?

Last but not least, this was the last question by that particular shareholder:

“Have you provided any gifts for shareholders today? I want some original Capcom merchandise.”

Yes, he definitely deserved gifts for asking such ‘productive’ questions. A knuckle sandwich is perhaps in order, or a copy of a real game for his son.

All jokes aside, head on over here for the full transcript of the Capcom shareholders meeting, as there are actually good questions in there asked by the other shareholders.

Capcom has experienced a renaissance of sorts in the past few years, so they shouldn’t be getting demands like kids not liking the graphics in their games, or their lack of arcade machines.
