The Lord Of The Rings TV Series Finds Its Director

Amazon’s The Lord Of The Rings TV series now has a director attached to its first two episodes, as well as act as one of its executive producers. That person is Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom director Juan Antonio ‘J.A.’ Bayona, who will be joined by producer Belén Atienza.

The upcoming LOTR TV series will be set in Middle Earth during the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of Peter Jackson’s iconic The Lord Of The Rings trilogy of films. You won’t be seeing any of the recognizable faces like Frodo, Gandalf, or the others.

Speaking with IGN, Bayona said:

“J.R.R. Tolkien created one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of all time, and as a lifelong fan it is an honor and a joy to join this amazing team.

I can’t wait to take audiences around the world to Middle-earth and have them discover the wonders of the Second Age, with a never before seen story.”

JD Payne and Patrick McKay will be the lead writers for the series. Nothing else has been revealed about the series as of yet, which means that it is likely in very early development stages.

Spinoff adaptations of the franchise tend to be lukewarm or mediocre at best, including The Hobbit trilogy of films and the Middle-Earth games by Warner Bros. It remains to be seen if Amazon’s efforts will be any different, but with Game Of Thrones recently ending its run, the LOTR TV series could fill the void for epic fantasy TV.
