Cyberpunk 2077 Movie Now ‘More Possible’ Thanks To Keanu Reeves

The genesis of the Cyberpunk franchise began with Mike Pondsmith creating the first Cyberpunk The Roleplaying Game of the Dark Future tabletop RPG game back in 1988. Now it’s being adapted into a major video game by The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, but who knows?
Perhaps there’s a Cyberpunk live-action movie on the horizon.
In an interview with Video Games Chronicle, Pondsmith said that he can’t reveal anything about Cyberpunk movie rights, but he confirmed that the involvement of hotshot Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves has brought a bigger spotlight to his franchise in pop culture.
Pondsmith said:
“I can’t really say anything on [movie rights].
But with Keanu Reeves being tied up in things, it’s become much more of a possibility.â€
When questioned further on the subject of a possible Cyberpunk movie, Pondsmith said that his franchise isn’t too cerebral (as to alienate mainstream consumers) or contain too much mindless action, but rather a “sweet spot” between the two.
“My favourite film is Blade Runner, but I recognise inherently that it’s a cerebral film and 2049 was even more cerebral.
A cerebral film is not necessarily going to allow other people to enter that space and understand it, but at the same time you don’t want to do it totally action either.
We found a sweet spot with Cyberpunk which is, we make you think, but we don’t bog you down and give you an education.
Last but not least, Pondsmith admits that there are certain things that some medium do better than others, be they tabletop games, video games, or live-action movies.
“I’ve recognised over the years that you have to adapt to the medium to make it effective.
You don’t use one medium you use another.
What I do with tabletop is very different from what I would do in a video game.
Having to go between the two of them now, I can see that there are things that are easy to do in tabletop that I would never try to do in video games,
but there are things in video games that have much higher impact than I’ll ever have in tabletop.
And that will change if we ever do a film for this thing. What I expect to see will be different.â€
Cyberpunk 2077 is slated to launch for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on 16 April 2020. In the meantime, check out the 10 details we learned from the Cyberpunk 2077 E3 2019 demo here. We also recently learned that CD Projekt Red could actually have as many as three different Cyberpunk projects currently in the works.
