Borderlands 3 Producer Believes Other Looter Shooters Should Take More Ideas From Borderlands

In a recent interview with PCGamesN, Borderlands 3 producer Chris Brock spoke a bit about the comparisons between Borderlands 3 and other looter shooters that have been released since the last main Borderlands game. Not counting Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, the last game was released 7 years ago.

During that time, games like Destiny and The Division have been filling up the looter shooter market and even had enough time to dish out sequels and expansions. Brock stated that the developers at Gearbox did indeed study those games plus other successful shooters such as Apex Legends and Titanfall.

“There are things we’ve learned from those games. We needed to understand what they’re doing, and what works and what doesn’t work.”

– Chris Brock, Borderlands 3 producer.

The producer acknowledged that games like Titanfall and Destiny had “wonderful shooting mechanics” and that they aimed for Borderlands 3 to at least be as good as those two games.

Changing up the tone, Brock stated that he was surprised to find that those games didn’t take more ideas from the Borderlands series. He said that “There are times that I wondered why some of those shooter games haven’t cribbed a bit more from us.”

“To me it’s actually really important that I shot, I killed that enemy, it dropped loot, it’s over there, I can look at that loot, and see what it is and pick it up and use it. It feels like if you’re a loot-based game, that’s very important.”

– Chris Brock.

Brock also noted that one of the Borderlands series’ strengths is that the games often have more imaginative quests and the positive response from players confirm that it’s something worth working hard on.

Borderlands 3 will be released on 13 September 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. We had the opportunity to interview Paul Sage, the game’s creative director and you can read about it here.
