Sony Blames Marvel For Spider-Man Deal Breaking Down

Spider-Man no more? Sorry, Spidey and MCU fans, it looks like there won’t be a future for the wallcrawler in the MCU after negotiations between Marvel and Sony reached a dead end. According to Deadline, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios won’t be able to produce any more Spider-Man movies after Sony deals reach a dead end.

The concern on both sides is ultimately money, as both Marvel Studios and Sony want a bigger slice of the pie. This is evident as Spider-Man: Far From Home recently broke records to become the highest-grossing Sony Pictures movie in history, surpassing even 2012’s Skyfall.

Sources say that Disney asked for 50/50 co-financing arrangement for future Spider-Man movies, as well as other movies related to the franchise like Venom 2 and the upcoming Morbius movie. Sony reportedly rejected the offer almost immediately without even considering or countering it.

Sony reportedly believes that the 50/50 request is too much and that they can survive without the MCU. It’s understandable to think about why Sony wanted out of the deal, as Disney is partly to blame for its greed over demanding fifty percent of box office revenue when they’re already receiving five percent of first-dollar gross.

In an exclusive statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony said:

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise.

We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.

We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own.

Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”

Say goodbye to Spider-Man in the MCU, folks, Sony seems adamant on continuing the Spider-Man franchise on their own, even without Feige and Marvel Studios.
