[Report] PS5 Controller May Be Ditching A Big Feature

Since the day the PlayStation 5 was officially named, gamers all over the world have been anticipating more news and reveals regarding the upcoming console. Some new patent images may have revealed the Dualshock 5.

The Japanese patent office has just published a new patent filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. One glance and it’s easy to conclude that this is probably the new PS5 controller AKA the Dualshock 5. It looks very similar to the Dualshock 4 but there are some noteworthy differences including the exclusion of one of the Dualshock 4’s defining features.

Despite only being implemented in the Dualshock 4, it seems that the light bar will no longer be featured on the Dualshock 5. It’s something that helped me determine controller arrangements in multiplayer and it also provided an attractive aesthetic flair.  If this is true, I’ll definitely be missing this.

Other noteworthy features include things already mentioned before. We’ll break it down:

  • Thank the gods for the USB type-C upgrade, which will probably allow for faster charging times.
  • I’m not too sure about that slightly enlarged touchpad but everything else looks just similar to the Dualshock 4.
  • In terms of size, it’s quite obvious that the Dualshock 5 is a bit chunkier compared to its predecessor.
  • The analog sticks appear a bit smaller but the trigger buttons are slightly larger. Perhaps this is for the implementation of the “adaptive triggers” that Sony talked about during the PS5 reveal.

As mentioned before, the controller will be ditching Rumble technology and replace it with haptic feedback. Sony claims that haptic feedback will allow for more accurate sensations in gameplay and even introduce a sense of resistance never before felt in prior controllers.

A Better Change?

As someone who has always found the Dualshock controllers a bit too light compared to the more comfortable Xbox controllers, I am honestly really excited to get a feel of this bulkier Dualshock 5. I am also glad that my ever-shrinking collection of micro-USB cables will no longer be a problem when it comes to charging and connecting the Dualshock controller.

As mentioned earlier, I will be missing that light bar and I am curious to see how the controller will indicate different players using the same console. There’s also that feature of indicating charging status which has been pretty handy when putting the PS4 in rest mode.
