Pokémon Sword/Shield Sold 1.3 Million Copies In Japan Within 3 Days

You can’t keep Game Freak’s juggernaut monster-rearing simulation down.

According to recent Famitsu sales numbers, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield sold 1,364,544 retail copies in the first three days after its release in Japan. These numbers include physical game copies, download cards, and the game’s double pack, but excludes digital sales.

Guess that means Super Smash Bros. Ultimate isn’t the fastest-selling  Nintendo Switch game anymore; it sold 1.23  million copies within the first few days of its release. For comparison’s sake:

  • Pokémon Sun/Moon sold 1.9 million on a 22.1 million 3DS install base in 2016 onwards. Its updated version Pokémon Ultra Sun/Moon did 1.2 million.
  • Pokémon X/Y sold 2 million copies on a 13 million 3DS userbase back in 2013 onwards.
  • Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee did 660,000 on the Switch.

Keep in mind that the Nintendo Switch is close to 3 years old while the 3DS is currently 9 years old, which still makes these Sword and Shield numbers pretty impressive in retrospect. It also proves that Game Freak’s way of making Pokémon games may not be changing anytime soon, alleged resource cutbacks and all.
