Earlier this year, we received what was arguably the best western kaiju movie yet in the form of Godzilla King Of The Monsters. It was the third official entry in the shared cinematic MonsterVerse, setting up the stage for the highly-anticipated clash between Godzilla and King Kong (from 2017’s King Skull Island).
However, kaiju fans will have to wait a while longer yet before they’ll be able to witness this titanic clash between the two iconic monsters. According to Variety, Warner Bros. has announced Godzilla Vs Kong will now release on 20 November 2020, a whole eight months after its initial release date of 13 March 2020.
The reason why is probably due to the lower-than-expected box office returns of Godzilla King Of The Monsters, which only garnered US$385 million worldwide on a US$200 million production budget. The biggest problem with the delay is that the movie will be facing stiff competition in the form of Marvel Studios’ The Eternals, which is slated to release on 6 November 2019.
Let’s hope that the Godzilla Vs Kong movie arrives unscathed from its financially-disappointing predecessor. In the meantime, check out my review of Godzilla King Of The Monsters here.
