Plan 8 Is A Futuristic MMO Shooter From Counter-Strike’s Co-Creator

G-Star 2019, the South Korean equivalent of Gamescom, just began today. Renowned games studio Pearl Abyss has announced a bunch of new games that they are working on. One of them is an MMO shooter that seems to be a combination of The Surge and Tom Clancy’s The Division.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX_Vab2KQAw&w=560&h=315]Judging by the reveal trailer, Plan 8 is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a Terminator-like scenario has occurred and evil murderous robots roam the world. According to the developers, players will not only use guns and melee weapons but also wear various exo-suits that give them different abilities.
The game’s lead producer Lee Seungki says that the title Plan 8 has a deeper meaning that’s tied to the game’s setting. It seems that he’s aware of other games in the genre and said that they’re aiming to create “something above and beyond the conventions of shooter games” already in the market. I’m assuming they’re talking about games like Destiny and The Division.
Also working on the game is Minh Le, the co-creator of Counter-Strike. He makes it clear that the game is an “Exo-suit MMO Shooter” which doesn’t exactly sound all that unique when compared to a game like Bioware’s Anthem. Hopefully, it’s not going to go down that same road.
Judging by how the “8” in the title resembles the symbol for infinity and one of the characters saying “Damn it, not again.” at the end of the reveal trailer, I’m going to guess that it has to do something with a time loop or maybe an unavoidable future kind of situation. I just realised that that makes it even more similar to Terminator.
There’s no release date yet so it’s safe to assume that Plan 8 is far from being complete. Lee stated that the game is being developed for PC and consoles but didn’t specifically name which consoles. The reveal trailer really does a good job of making it look exciting so let’s wait and see what the gameplay looks like.
