The PS5 Launch Titles We Want To See
It’s official: the PlayStation 5 is coming out in late 2020 so there’s plenty of time for everyone to save up money to enter the next generation of console gaming. It also means that there’s plenty of time for everyone to talk about their most anticipated PS5 games.
Thanks to the great lineup of exclusives we’ve had (and will keep on having) on the PS4, expectations are set really high for the yet unrevealed PS5 launch lineup. With games like Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and many others, Sony is going to have to work really hard to make sure they can keep impressing everyone.
To impress us here at Kakuchopurei, perhaps it won’t be so hard. Okay, maybe it will be a bit hard.
Just a little bit.
…Let’s get to the list, shall we?
If any of you have played Horizon Zero Dawn and enjoyed it as much as I did, then you’ve definitely been waiting for a sequel. It was first released in 2017 by Guerilla Games and ever since then, Guerilla hasn’t released a single new title besides the Frozen Wilds DLC which was released in late 2017 so it’s quite possible that they’ve been hard at work making a sequel all this time.
I love Horizon Zero Dawn primarily thanks to its gameplay. It was one of those games I felt was worthy of its 20+ hours of playtime. Almost every second playing was spent doing something fun like meticulously taking down individual body parts from robot dinosaurs using my bow and arrow. The more I progressed through the game, the more robo-dinos I discovered and that helped keep things fresh.
Visually, the game was nothing short of superb. The colourful environment showed a healthy amount of fauna and it succeeded in emphasising the futuristic designs of the robo-dinos that gathered in each area. Who knows that Guerilla could do with the hardware of the PS5?
Also, I want to see more robo-dino designs!
I do want the InFamous series to make a comeback, with Sucker Punch in top form making a fourth game that ties up parts 1, 2, and Second Son.
For those who don’t know what InFamous is, imagine a superhero origin story where a courier gains lightning powers. From the way the first game on the PS3 starts (city-wide blackout! Pandemonium!) to the cool skills, parkour, and lightning powers you get that’s also determined by your karma (good powers = healing & precision, bad powers = chaos & AoE), InFamous is a unique beast that sets itself apart from other sandbox titles during the late 2000 period of gaming. Well, almost…
Part 2 is more of the same but with bigger stakes and a conclusive ending to the two-parter. Second Son was lacking and did not feature the gravitas and epic scale parts 1 and  2 had. But it did feature neon, smoke,  concrete, and “video” powers, so it counts for something. And the game’s version of Seattle is nice!
Even if Second Son kinda stumbled, the Infamous: First Light standalone prequel outshined the main game to the letter with a likeable protagonist with a tragic backstory involving the loss of innocence and the wrath that follows a scorned woman.
Hopefully, Sucker Punch can take these lessons from here and revisit the series after they’re done with Ghost of Tsushima. As nice as that game is shaping up to be, I do miss the gravely voice of Cole and arc lightning innocent bystanders Emperor Palpatine style.
One of my favourite PlayStation exclusive franchises has always been Insomniac’s Ratchet And Clank series ever since the first instalment released back in 2002. We received four great titles for each generation (PS2 and PS3) respectively, not to mention all the other spinoffs.
However, the PS4 era has only seen a mere single game in the form of 2016’s Ratchet And Clank, which itself was meant to be a remake of the original 2002 game and a reboot for the franchise.
The best of Ratchet And Clank has offered great gameplay experiences with its mix of action platforming, similar to Naughty Dog’s Jak franchise, though with a more specific focus on science fiction elements with crazy weapons and worlds to explore and a heavier emphasis on third-person shooting.
All of this made for a zany and fun experience unlike any other third-person platformer out there. The over-the-top weapons are clear highlights. There are weapons that can turn enemies into sheep or ducks, which when upgraded will then turn those animals into balls of exploding flame and destroy your enemies.
There are cannons that project black holes, gloves that summon small robotic companions, and even shotguns that disintegrate enemies into a shower of 8-bit pixels.
The 2016 Ratchet And Clank game on the PS4 (a super-polished remake FYI) deserves a sequel even if it’s on the PS5. Now that Sony Interactive Entertainment has acquired Insomniac Games, there’s literally nothing stopping them from making another Ratchet And Clank game.
Well, besides being forced to put all their resources into making a sequel to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, that is. Serious and award-winning games like The Last Of Us and God Of War are great and all, but developers shouldn’t forget franchises like Ratchet And Clank that put them on the map to begin with.
After a slew of underwhelming Star Wars movies AND games – I’m looking at you, J.J. Abrams Star Wars & reboot of Battlefronts 1 & 2, I believe fans of the franchise are due for a KotOR game that not only lives up to its DNA, but also sets a new benchmark on branching storylines with consequential decisions from the get-go.
Obsidian has shown us that they still possess the chops to make an excellent narrative-driven game via The Outer Worlds so what’s stopping them from pulling out the stops in surpassing what older KotOR titles had to offer over a decade ago.
Why KotOR? I just felt by going way back before Luke, whoever will get to work on this angle wouldn’t have their creative juices shackled by what J.J. Abrams & Rian Johnson churned out recently. To sweeten the deal, why not make this sequel a timed PlayStation exclusive?
Also since it was confirmed that the third game of the series was indeed in the plans, what better time to flesh it out in the best form possible in the most powerful home gaming console in history?
Honestly, it’s so early into the unveiling of the PlayStation 5 that we don’t even know what it will look like. Taking that into consideration, we have absolutely no idea what to expect in the PS5 lineup of launch titles.
In a positive light, that means that every game we’ve listed here (and the ones you guys have in your own lists) are definitely a possibility. So here’s hoping that Sony and the developers are cooking up some exciting games for us to play with all that good hardware that the PS5 is packing.
