Ghost Of Tsushima Will Have A Wide Open World With No Waypoints

Infamous Second Son is still one of the most impressive looking PS4 games to be released. Sucker Punch wants their upcoming samurai game to even bigger and better. One of those improvements involve taking something out rather than putting something in.

The folks over at VG24/7 have discovered an important detail revealed in a Ghost of Tsushima interview uploaded by PlayStation back in October 2017. In said video, the game’s creative art director Jason Connell explains that the game’s open world won’t have any waypoints.

“We really want you to have that choice of “Hey, that cool bamboo forest over there, I really want to check it out, I want to head in that direction, I want to see what it is.” There’s no waypoint. There’s nothing that says go here and look at this bamboo forest.”

One of the major problems with recent open world games is that they induce checkbox fatigue. What I mean by that is that players feel overwhelmed at the dozens and dozens of waypoints and markers that are scattered across the game’s open world map. Recent Assassin’s Creed games are notorious for this.

Map markers are still needed to point out important destinations as well as indicate fast travel points. What Ghost of Tsushima is trying to achieve is to repalce points of interest markers with player curiosity. Instead of having the game tell you a building has something interesting in it, you’ll have to find out yourself through exploration.

Ghost of Tsushima doesn’t have a specific release date yet but it’s scheduled to be released in either the second or third quarter of 2020. It will be exclusively launched for the PS4, making it one of the console’s last AAA games before the arrival of the PlayStation 5.
