Witcher Game Developer And Author Are Now On Good Terms Again

There’s still quite a lot of people who aren’t aware that The Witcher games and the recent Netflix series are adapted from books. The author of the books hasn’t been too happy with his share of those successes but it looks like things are looking up.

CD Projekt RED (CDPR) recently issued a statement on their official website regarding their relationship with The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski. The two parties have signed an agreement to further solidify their relationship.

This means that CDPR maintains its rights to make video games, graphic novels, board games, and merchandise based on The Witcher plus some new rights as well. On Sapkowski’s side, this means that he is satisfied with what he’s getting in the form of compensation.

Back in 2018, Sapkowski sent his lawyer to request for an additional US$16 million because he believed the initially agreed compensation was too low. Under the Polish Act on Copyright and Related Rights, an author can ask for extra compensation when the orignal sum is too low based on “benefits obtained in association with the use of that author’s work.”

It’s good to see CDPR doing their best to honour Sapkowski for his great work in creating The Witcher universe. There’s a strong possibility we’ll be getting The Witcher 4 after the studio wraps up on Cyberpunk 2077.
