Digital Tax Comes To PS Store Malaysia In 2020
By Burhan ZamriVerified|December 27, 2019|0 Comment
In place of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Malaysian government is implementing the Sales and Services Tax (SST). This has affected the prices for services such as Netflix, Spotify, and even purchases on Steam. The PlayStation Store joins the list next week.
All games will see a 6% price hike starting on the first day of 2020.
The official PlayStation Malaysia website has just posted an announcement regarding the SST price update. Starting from 1 January 2020 on 8AM (MYT), the 6% digital tax will be applied to any purchasable items and subscription services.
Do note that the prices updates will only be implemented on the PlayStation Store during 4 January to 6 January 2020. Prior to that, users might see price differences between what’s displayed on the store page and on the checkout page. The correct amount is shown on the checkout page.
There are two exceptions. PlayStation Plus subscription costs will not have price updates “at this timing” and there will be SST applied to users topping up their PlayStation Store wallets.
Protip: PS Plus subscriptions stack. Even if you already have a live PS Plus subscription, it’s recommended to buy another three months or a year’s worth if it’s on sale. There’s a strong possibility it will be taxed in the future, similar to subscription plans like Netflix and Spotify.
The PlayStation Store holiday sale is still ongoing. It ends on 5 January 2020 so there’s still plenty of time to take advantage of those discounts before the new digital tax is applied. Get shopping!
