The Nintendo Switch Is Doing Pretty Darn Well…

Nintendo has published its latest financial report for last year that ended on 31 December 2019, revealing new sales milestones for the Nintendo Switch consoles and several titles. The Nintendo Switch has now officially sold 52.48 million units, overtaking the SNES’ 49.1 million units and becoming the company’s third best-selling home console of all time after the Nintendo Wii and NES.

Pokémon Sword and Shield managed to sell over 16 million copies by 31 December 2019, which is a massive achievement considering that the game was derided by fans for its lack of past-generation Pokémon and other issues. In comparison, Pokémon Sun and Moon lifetime sales were 16.17 million, which Sword and Shield will likely surpass soon.

Meanwhile, check out all the other sales numbers for Nintendo Switch titles below:

  • Luigi’s Mansion 3 – 5.37 million
  • Super Mario Maker 2 – 5.04 million
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening – 4.19 million
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses – 2.58 million
  • Ring Fit Adventure – 2.17 million
  • Astral Chain – 1.03 million
  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 – 1.02 million

Some points to note: Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the highest-selling title of the series. Ditto Fire Emblem: Three Houses; it beats all the Game Boy Advance, Wii, DS, and 3DS entries.

There was no mention of a Nintendo Switch Pro in the financial report, though Nintendo did state the following:

“We will continue to convey the appeal of both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite hardware, and work to expand their installed base.

In addition to Nintendo-published titles like Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore (January), Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX (March) and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (March), there are also a robust variety of appealing titles from other software publishers scheduled to be released.

We will work to keep the platform energized by continuously introducing attractive new titles in addition to the popular titles already released.”
