A Granblue Fantasy Guide For Those About To Start Granblue Fantasy: Versus
Gran is the main protagonist in Granblue Fantasy, as well as the male variant of two selectable genders. Hailing from the small village of Zinkenstill, he and his lizard-like childhood companion Vyrn embark on a grand journey to Estalucia after receiving a cryptic letter from his missing father.
Along the way, his fate becomes intertwined with a girl named Lyria, who is able to control legendary creatures called primals.
Gran’s moveset is well-rounded and beginner friendly. He is able to control space with his fireballs, hold his own up close, and reliably punish jump-ins. For all intents and purposes, he’s the Granblue equivalent to Street Fighter’s Ryu, who possesses decent defense and offense, and is capable of adapting to any style..
Typically a silent avatar in the mobile game, he now sports his own personality and dialogue in GBVS. The female version, Djeeta, is offered as DLC and is said to exist as her own separate character within the world of Granblue Fantasy Versus.
Like Vyrn and Lyria, Katalina has accompanied Gran since the very beginning. A knight of the Erste Empire, she abandons her allegiance to the empire after discovering their plot to use Lyria’s powers for their own gain.
Though she’s often cool, calculating, and skilled with a sword, her lacking sense of direction and abysmal cooking skills tell another story. She also finds all cute things simply irresistible, much to the amusement of her companions.
If Gran is the equivalent to Ryu, then Katalina is very much the Ken of this game. She shares much of the same moves as Gran but employs a sharper precision to all of them. Her moves reach further out and better excel at controlling the mid-range compared to Gran. However, what she has in powerful pokes, she loses in terms of rushdown potential.
Lancelot leads as Captain of the Order of the White Dragons, an organization of knights dedicated to protecting the nation of Feendrache. Before this, Lancelot was Vice Captain of the Order of the Black Dragons, which eventually disbanded after the country’s King Josef was unexpectedly murdered.
He is dutiful and brave, standing firm with his twin blades for king and country.
Lancelot is a tricky mix-up character who enjoys creating confusion. Using a combination of his ice projectile and quick dash specials, he forces his opponents to make a guess as to where his strikes will come from.
He’s a ninja in all but name, and though he may be overwhelming to face up close, he suffers in matching the far-reaching attacks of other characters.
The son of an aristocrat, but one that grew to develop a strong sense of justice. Percival would one day travel to the Kingdom of Feendrache to become a knight. Like Lancelot, he held the position of Vice Captain as a member of the Order of the Black Dragons.
However, after the death of King Josef, he left the reformed Order of the White Dragons, seeking to broaden his horizons on realizing a country where even the weak could prosper.
With a prideful demeanour matched only by his unending concern for the vulnerable, the Lord of Flames roams the Sky Realm in search for those that share his dreams of a peaceful utopia.
Faithful to his title, Percival wields the power of flames to turn the tides against his opponents. Much of his special moves are reminiscent of Gran and Katalina’s, and though weaker, become powerful after he takes a moment to imbue his sword with flame.
Through powering up his sword, his special moves gain added damage and useful effects that many will need to be wary of.
Zeta belongs to the Society, an organization specializing in hunting down primal beasts. Though hunting such entities is in itself a huge undertaking, Zeta gets by with the help of the Spear of Arvess, a seal weapon that is capable of absorbing a primal beast’s power and subsequently kill it.
Upbeat but also ferociously stubborn, she undertakes missions for the Society alongside her trusty partner Vaseraga.
Controlling the mid-range with her spear attacks, Zeta can also get a little tricky with her multi-directional thrust attacks. She has better control over the air than most and is also capable of shifting the fight’s momentum at a moment’s notice thanks to her guard skill.
A member of the Society, Vaseraga wields the seal weapon called Great Scythe Grynoth and is always seen with his partner Zeta. The two are known to quarrel on even the simplest of matters, but there’s hardly a more compatible duo when it comes to getting the job done.
With a large stature and an always concealed face, Vaseraga proves to be an intimidating person to approach. Yet, beyond his curt personality is a kind heart that’s always willing to help those in need.
Vaseraga is a moving tank whose whole schtick involves absorbing attacks to deal a whole world of hurt. Many of his specials allow him to shrug off pain, so long as he doesn’t get hit too many times. In the right hands, he’ll be able to power through stray hits with ferocity and making the opponent wish they hadn’t pressed a button.
A pro-wrestler, bartender, and chef in equal measure. Ladiva is a woman of many talents who also proves to be unrivaled when faced in the arena.
Despite her capacity to dish out the hurt, however, she brandishes a tender heart that cherishes all living things. Her lectures on self-care shouldn’t be dismissed, and neither should her tight hugs that are ever brimming with the power of love.
Ladiva is the classic grappler archetype through and through. Her entire game plan revolves around conditioning her opponents to sit still, and then scooping them up from the ground when they least expect it. Similarly, she capitalizes greatly on frustrated opponents who decide to jump at her recklessly, or throw a projectile her way after she has her Skybound Art ready.
Wielding the shining (and oversized) blade Claiomh Solais, this Harvin knight may be tiny, but is one force to be reckoned with. After being saved by the Lumiel Order of Holy Knights, Charlotta dedicated her life to the order, eventually rising in the ranks to become their captain.
Although she is renowned by many as a calm and steadfast leader, very few are aware of her massive height complex. And when it comes to getting taller, she’s desperate enough to try just about anything.
Charlotta uses charged inputs rather than motions to unleash her special moves. Many of her moves are very similar to Street Fighter’s E. Honda, as she performs attacks akin to his Hundred Hand Slap, Sumo Headbutt, and Sumo Butt Slam.
Strangely, she also has Akuma’s Demon Flip as a way of mixing up the opponent. As a result, Charlotta is able to stick to her opponent like glue with a drawback being her slightly stubbier normals.
Metera is a genius who mastered both the magic of flight as well as arcane bow magic in her village. Once a guardian of an ancient altar, her village’s obsession with tradition caused her to ditch her duties in search for freedom in the vast sky beyond.
Both erratic and forward with the people she meets, her party girl tendencies might make you forget that she’s more than exceptional with a bow. Helped by a combination of flight and her magical arrows, Metera is as unpredictable as they come in the heat of battle.
Metera is a highly mobile zoner that can move about the screen at a fast pace, and then frustrate her opponent by peppering them with small, individual shots that eventually add up in damage. Equally as valuable is the threat of her Skybound Art, which acts as a highly damaging anti-air if she catches her enemy jumping at the wrong moment.
Ferry was a young girl residing alone on the Mist-Shrouded Isle where, thanks to the power of the primal beast Celeste, the dead lived on in eternal unlife. She yearns to be reunited with her younger sister, who left the island many years ago.
After Gran and his friends undo the curse of the island, she finds herself finally able to do so. Though simply now a spirit, she journeys forth in search of her long lost sister with an entourage of ghostly creatures that fight alongside her.
Unlike Metera’s bows, Ferry’s zoning mainly sees her using a whip to control space from a distance. Similar to Dhalsim’s limbs, Ferry is able to stick out attacks with relatively little risk to keep her opponent away, but has a difficult time keeping them out if they manage to worm through her defense.
However, by carefully setting up her specials, she’s also able to turn on the offense in interesting ways the enemy might not expect.
Brofam for life is a creed that Lowain and his best buddies, Elsam and Tomoi, live by. Whether they’re hunting for girls to woo or concocting a new scheme to catapult them into the attention of others, there’s never a dull moment with this troublesome trio. But for Lowain, his run-in with the beautiful Katalina was a magical moment that inspired him to quit his job and become a cook aboard the Grandcypher.
Best bros gotta stick together though, so it’s no surprise that Elsam and Tomoi are along for the ride as his trusty assistants.
Lowain is very much the joke character of the game. Besides some finesse with his dagger, he’s able to summon a Katalina bot to shoot lasers and missiles.
While Elsam and Tomoi rush forward to cover his back, Lowain can also eat food to replenish either his health or his Skybound Art gauge.
Best of all, he can seemingly summon forth the primal beast Yggdrasil to his aid in a pinch, which forces his opponent to suddenly have to play a dodging mini-game of sorts.
Granblue Fantasy is an ongoing game that gets updated on a regular basis, which is why the developers are always careful to not strictly commit any stories to a particular timeline. This makes it easier for beginners to enjoy new content without having to worry about keeping tabs on the lore.
GBVS falls under a similar situation. There are small hints as to when the game roughly takes place, such as characters using abilities that were only obtained later in the story, but much of this isn’t crucial to know. Like many of Granblue’s standalone event stories, GBVS is a detour in the main plot and simply asks that you know the basic premise to get started.
With that being said, happy skyfaring!
