Activision Blizzard Mobile Revenue Eclipses Their Console & PC Business

A lot of developers are gearing up for the next generation of gaming this year, and that includes Activision Blizzard. However, it seems like they’ll probably be changing their business strategy soon if their revenue results are any indication. The company now derives the majority of its revenue from mobile.

According to the NASDAQ Stock Market, mobile platform sales make up close to 35 percent of the Activision Blizzard’s total revenues with roughly US$2.3 billion in sales, and it will likely continue to grow in the near future. In comparison, consoles and PC only accounted for US$1.92 billion and US$1.72 billion, respectively.

This is largely thanks to their acquisition of King in 2016, the developer of popular mobile games like Candy Crush, as well as revenue from recent titles like Call Of Duty Mobile. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said (via Gamasutra):

“Using Call of Duty as an example, with the introduction of Call of Duty: Mobile, we grew our player base from 40 million to 100 million players in less than a year.

We expect significant growth in the Call of Duty franchise in 2020 as compared to 2019, as a result of this and from other unannounced Call of Duty initiatives.”

It seems like the rumour that King is currently working on a Crash Bandicoot mobile game for Activision Blizzard is becoming more and more probable every day. The gaming industry is a rapidly-changing machine, and it’s not a surprise for companies to alter their business strategies in an instant.
