The Witcher Gets Its Vesemir & It’s Not Mark Hamill

Fans have long lobbied for legendary actor Mark Hamill (of Star Wars and Joker’s voice fame) to be cast as Vesemir, old man Witcher and mentor to The Witcher protagonist Geralt Of Rivia. Last weekend, Netflix shocked the world when it announced that they have cast an actor in the role of Vesemir, but it’s not Mark Hamill.

It’s Danish actor Kim Bodnia. He is probably best known for the spy thriller TV series Killing Eve, which earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Despite not as well-known outside of Europe, his career actually dates back all the way to 1989.

Vesemir is one of the few survivors of the sacking of Kaer Morhen in the history of The Witcher, making him one of the oldest living Witchers in the Continent.

The Witcher Season 2 will also star Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones) as Nivellen, Paul Bullion (Peaky Blinders) as Lambert, Yasen Atour (Young Wallender) as Coen, Thue Ersted Rasmussen (Fast and Furious 9) as Eskel, Agnes Bjorn as Vereena, Aisha Fabienne Ross (The Danish Girl) as Lydia, and Mecia Simson as Francesca.

Bodnia’s Vesemir will probably interact with new characters Lambert and Eskel, both of whom are Witchers like Geralt. Both Lambert and Eskel are from the same School Of The Wolf as Geralt, as all three of them were trained at Kaer Morhen as children under Vesemir.

Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich previously confirmed that The Witcher Season 2 will be more linear in nature, which is a departure from the confusing time-jumping narrative of the first season.

The Witcher Season 2 is expected to premiere sometime in 2021. In the meantime, check out my review of The Witcher Season 1 here, or head on over here for all the easter eggs and references discovered in the first season.
