Overwatch League Cancels March And April Events
By Melvyn Tan|March 12, 2020|0 Comment
Overwatch League events for March and April have been cancelled, with Covid-19 once again being the reason.
“Concurrently, we are working hand-in-hand with our teams to see that all matches are played when it’s safe and logistically feasible,” says the statement.
“We are considering the various options available to esports in this effort, so that all teams – including those previously impacted by scheduling changes in China – can get back to doing what they do best.”

Other Overwatch League events remain untouched for now. A follow-up tweet also clarified that the Overwatch League 2020 would not be cancelled and that matches would go on.
“Out of concern for fans, players, staff, and others we have just cancelled upcoming Homestand events. We WILL be playing matches with our teams this month, next month, and beyond – and these matches will be broadcast to fans,” they wrote. “The ability to do this in the face of unforeseen challenges like COVID-19 is part of what makes our business so unique.”
In addition, Activision Esports CEO Pete Vlastelica tweeted that the matches would be broadcast on YouTube, with the schedule to be revealed soon.
While it wasn’t specified if those matches would be held in empty arenas, it’s probably going to be the case. If the March and April Overwatch Homestand events have been cancelled out of safety concerns, I doubt that Blizzard would suddenly want to pack a massive crowd inside an arena at this point in time.
