Xbox Explains Why Series X Controller Still Uses AA Batteries
By Alleef Ashaari|March 31, 2020|0 Comment
When Microsoft initially unveiled the Xbox Series X controller earlier this month, many gamers were surprised that the next-gen controller still used AA batteries, especially considering that the PS4’s Dualshock 4 has been using a built-in rechargeable battery for years.
Speaking with Eurogamer, Xbox partner director of program management Jason Ronald explained that both consumer and internal development feedback were split 50/50 on the matter of the Xbox Series X controller’s battery.
He said:
“What it comes down to is when actually talking to gamers, it’s kind of polarising and there is a strong camp that really wants AAs.
So just giving flexibility is the way to please both [sets of] people…
You can use a rechargeable battery pack and it works just like it does on the Elite, [but] it is a separate thing.”
Despite using AA batteries to power itself, Xbox Series X owners will still be able to purchase a rechargeable battery pack, albeit at an additional (pricey) cost. It’s hard to think why anyone would really prefer to use AA batteries instead of a convenient rechargeable pack.
I’ve been using my Dualshock 4 for years without any problems. Unless all you do is play games all day or more than 12 hours in a single sitting, a rechargeable internal battery pack would normally be enough to sustain your gaming. What do I know, it’s not like I write about video games for a living.
Besides still using AA batteries, the Xbox Series X controller will also feature a new D-pad, a Share button, a tactile dot pattern on the triggers, and a matte finish, as well as fit a wider range of hand sizes, especially smaller hands.
