The Devs Seem To Be Loving PS5 Specs So Far
By Alleef AshaariVerified|March 21, 2020|0 Comment
In response to Microsoft announcing the specs for Xbox Series X, Sony revealed the specs for their own next-gen console several days ago. However, the presentation was overly-technical for many normal gamers/consumers, who found it confusing and unclear.
On the other hand, game developers seem to really like what they’re hearing about the PS5 so far.
First up is The Order 1886 developer Ready At Dawn Studios founder and CTO Andrea Passino. According to him, the PS5 is so much more than simply its pure specs, and that it will be “one of the most revolutionary, inspired home consoles ever designed”.
Dollar bet: within a year from its launch gamers will fully appreciate that the PlayStation 5 is one of the most revolutionary, inspired home consoles ever designed, and will feel silly for having spent energy arguing about “teraflops” and other similarly misunderstood specs. 😘

Another is Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us Part 2 co-director (and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy director) Kurt Margenau, who said that the PS5’s SSD will mark a big leap for future games, especially PlayStation first-party exclusives. He’d certainly know, considering where and what he’s worked on.
Still tripping about this #PS5 SSD spec. Like, people don’t even know how big of a leap in terms of game design can be made, especially for 1st party that doesn’t have to design to lowest common denominator. By far the biggest leap in my career. Can’t wait.

Other developers have also echoed the same sentiment; that the PS5 SSD will be a literal game-changer, breaking current-gen limitations for bigger and better games. These include The Last Of Us Part 2 co-director Anthony Newman, Promethean AI founder Andrew Maximov, and former Insomniac Games employee James Cooper.
Here’s what they all said:
Most crucial part of the @cerny presentation imo. The SSD in the PS5 (and all the associated IO hardware) is going to fundamentally change how we design videogames by removing limitations we’ve been working around the last two gens. https://t.co/XDcj2BJ5gV

Just saw the new @PlayStation #PS5 presentation. Great job @cerny! Since I routinely have to explain to people why I’m excited for an SSD for rendering I thought I’d write a little thread to explain. Case in point: Uncharted 1 to Last of Us transition: pic.twitter.com/4Q75NEuigy

In theory, the #PS5’s SSD means developers can worry a little less about level streaming and memory micro-management which is a huge time sink late on in the dev cycle and the source of many bugs. This means it might actually help to reduce crunch! ðŸ‘

Last but not least, Borderlands franchise developer Gearbox Software co-founder and CEO Randy Pitchford also voiced out his approval of the PS5 on his personal Twitter account.
This is great stuff. I’m very excited about that I/O https://t.co/rRz5efceMJ

Despite being weaker in terms of raw power (and number of Teraflops) when compared with the Xbox Series X, it looks like the PS5 is already winning the hearts of developers before it even launches. That bodes well for Sony’s next-gen console, but it’s still too early to say for sure.
For instance, Sony themselves don’t even seem like they’re sure about the full extent of the PS5’s backwards compatibility, even though it’s already slated to launch in about eight or nine months at this point.
