Fallout 76 Bug Makes NPCs Steal Player Weapons

Fallout 76‘s wasteland – now on Steam – is finally populated by NPCs, breathing more life into it. Unfortunately, these NPCs seem to be different from the usual Fallout NPC, as they seem to have a habit of taking dead players’ weapons.

The issue was brought up in a recent Reddit thread. Lizardinosaurus wrote that events involving NPCs sometimes result in said NPCs looting players’ weapons and ammo when they die, and cited a personal experience where they “Just lost a BE Gatling gun when I died in riding shotgun and nearly 2k 5mm ammo only to find one of the NPCs now had a Gatling gun”. Ouch.

They then cautioned others not to use their “best/rarest weapons” in such events, which is sound advice given that another user commented, “Oh my God. They keep the gun… Because I swear he’s using an explosive Laser Rifle.”

Luckily, a Bethesda Community Manager was notified about the thread and has commented that Bethesda will “investigate this immediately”.

In the meantime, it looks like it’s best not to trust Fallout 76‘s NPCs for now. Who knows what they’re planning next, eh?
