Fortnite World Cup 2020 Is Cancelled

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed the life of yet another major esports event.

Epic Games has cancelled the Fortnite World Cup competition in 2020 due to the pandemic, health concerns, and difficulties in organizing and running an event while employees are working from home.

Here’s the official statement via Twitter:

“For the rest of 2020, all Fortnite competitions will be held online. Due to the limitations of cross region online competition, there will not be a Fortnite World Cup in 2020.”

While this year may be tough for Epic Games to host large offline events, the company is confident that they will go through with a Fortnite World Cup 2021. This is quite a significant blow against the Fortnite esports scene, as last year’s major tournament featured a US$40 million prize pool and huge traffic count both offline and online.

But hey, it’s not like as if Fortnite is going anywhere. That recent Travis Scott in-game concert and its results are proof of that.
