Ghostrunner Demo Is Out Now; Here’s What I Think So Far

Good news, speedrunning and Mirror’s Edge first-person parkour fans. The trio dev/publisher team of OML Games, Slipgate Iron, and 3D Realms (yes, the Duke Nukem/Shadow Warrior folks) have released a demo of the slick-looking first-person cyber ninja title Ghostrunner.

You can download it here via Steam. I’ve played a bit of it; about 10 minutes’ worth and so far it’s a pretty bold take on the first-person action game genre. Like Mirror’s Edge, you can parkour your way from point A to B; your ninja can wall-run, dash, air dash and slide. The cool thing about the dashes here is that when you hold the key, you slow time down to a crawl and can strafe either left or right while mid-air (shown at 4:09 on the video below).

This is crucial because you die in one hit here. Suddenly the game becomes segmented into “kill a bunch of dudes in a giant room” slew of objectives and you need to use the environment and your dodging to your advantage. This doesn’t need mentioning, but do look out for eventual speedrun videos for the demo that will be 1/6th the length of this video.

Apart from some kills needing a bit more “cinematic slowdown” and some touching-up, the demo shows a lot of promise. Just give us a ton of creative levels and an arcade mode, and we’re golden.

Ghostrunner will be out in 2020 for PC.
