Doctor Strange Director To Helm Sequel To Puppet Musical Labyrinth

Those who grew up in the 80s and/or are fans of the late legend David Bowie will remember Jim Henson’s musical fantasy puppet movie, Labyrinth. Almost three decades later, Sony’s TriStar Pictures is working on a sequel and has hired Scott Derrickson to direct (via Deadline).

Best known for his horror movies and Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange, Derrickson is no stranger to the weird and bizarre, which is what Labyrinth essentially was (and still is). Lisa Henson of The Jim Henson Company is the producer, with Brian Henson acting as executive producer. Maggie Levin, who wrote and directed Hulu’s Into the Dark: My Valentine, will pen the script for the sequel.

The original 1986 movie starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. It has maintained a cult following over the years, ranging from tie-in novels, comic books, and video games to screenings and even an annual fan masquerade ball.

No other details have been revealed about the Labyrinth sequel yet, so it must be in early development. At this point, we’re not sure who will be able to replace the late David Bowie and portray the same levels of eccentricity. Jennifer Connelly is still alive and well, so she could potentially reprise her role as Sarah Williams.

If you’re not familiar with the movie, check out the classic trailer below.
