Joel Schumacher, costume designer-turned-film-director and renowned for St. Elmo’s Fire, Falling Down, and those two campy 90s Batman films, has died. He lost his fight against cancer and passed away in New York City on Monday morning. He was 80.
The openly-gay director was infamous for introducing nipples onto the Batsuit in his Batman films as well as taking a more colourful approach to Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. While the films are a stark contrast to Tim Burton’s original dark vision, the two films were easier to market to kids.
Still, we shouldn’t forget Schumacher’s better contributions to cinema, which include the aforementioned St. Elmo’s Fire, Falling Down, and cult classics The Lost Boys and Flatliners. If you only knew Schumacher as the guy who ruined Batman in the late 90s and Phantom of the Opera, you may want to open up your mind a tad and check out those classics I mentioned.
Oh and if it weren’t for Schumacher, we wouldn’t be getting the cinematic beauty that is Demi Moore. Hubba, hubba…
