Netflix July 2020: Our Highlights & Picks

Since everyone is (still mostly) staying home because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, I’m sure you won’t want to waste time sifting through Netflix’s extensive catalogue of shows and movies just to decide on what to watch. The streaming giant updates its site every day, week, and month with new content, so I’m here to save your precious time.

Here are my personal recommendations and highlights for Netflix Malaysia’s July 2020 lineup and how to fill up your free time with worthwhile content at home:

Unsolved Mysteries (1 July 2020)

Unsolved Mysteries

The original Unsolved Mysteries covered creepy cold cases and unexplained paranormal phenomena, running from 1987 to 2010. Now the series is returning on Netflix, fusing signature elements from the original series with contemporary immersive, character-driven storytelling.

The first season will consist of 12 new episodes rooted in the experiences of ordinary people who have lived the unthinkable; from the trauma of a loved one’s unexplained disappearance or horrific death to the shock of a bizarre paranormal encounter.

Alongside detectives and journalists, family members offer clues, present theories, and identify suspects, hoping one viewer holds the key to solving the mystery.

Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries comes from the creators of the original docuseries, Cosgrove/Meurer Productions, and 21 Laps Entertainment; the producers behind Netflix’s own Stranger Things.

Warrior Nun (2 July 2020)

Warrior Nun

Created by Simon Barry and based on the Antarctic Press comic book series by Ben Dunn, Warrior Nun looks like it’s the awesome live-action adaptation with a badass female lead to boot. Look beyond the generic name, and this has the potential to be the next Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

The synopsis reads:

Caught in the middle of an ancient war between good and evil, a young girl wakes up in a morgue with inexplicable powers.

Her search for answers brings her to The Order of the Cruciform Sword, a secret society of warrior nuns sworn to protect the world from evil.

While juggling her responsibilities as the chosen one with the normal obstacles of a teenage girl, this mysterious fantasy drama is full of mystery, action, adventure, and teenage romance, proving our main character might fight in the name of good, but she’s no angel.

Ju-On Origins (3 July 2020)

JU ON Origins

Remember the iconic Ju-On ghost with the croaking voice? The legendary Japanese horror franchise that has become a smash hit worldwide gets its first official TV drama adaptation with Ju-On Origins.

The synopsis reads:

Can the people haunted by this house escape from its curse? And what kind of grim incident occurred in this cursed house in the past?

The Protector Season 4 (9 July 2020)

The Protector Season 4

Netflix’s The Protector impressed me with its first three seasons, immersing me in an exotic world with a unique language, culture, and setting. The Turkish fantasy series is reinforced by a compelling cast of characters, albeit with a generic plot structure and suffering from typical Netflix bloat.

However, it’s not every day that you see a series set in both modern and ancient Istanbul. I’m looking forward to seeing the epic conclusion of the series. That’s right; Season 4 will be The Protector‘s final season.

The Old Guard (10 July 2020)

The Old Gaurd

It’s another comic book adaptation (based on Image Comics’ The Old Guard by acclaimed comic book writer Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernandez) and this time, it’s an action movie starring Charlize Theron in the lead role as an immortal ass-kicking warrior.

The synopsis reads:

Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries.

But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.

Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (LOVE & BASKETBALL, BEYOND THE LIGHTS), THE OLD GUARD is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.

Cursed (17 July 2020)

Cursed

What if a woman picked up Excalibur instead of King Arthur? I know Saber exists in the Fate Type/Moon universe, but this new live-action fantasy series is based on the New York Times bestselling book by Tom Wheeler and Frank Miller; a living legend in the comics industry, having written some of the best and most iconic graphic novels, many of which have been adapted into live-action movies.

These include Zack Snyder’s 300 (the one with King Leonidas screaming “This is Sparta!”), The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City, and more.

Cursed is a re-imagination of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a young woman with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake.

After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a humble mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.

Transformers War For Cybertron Trilogy Siege (30 July 2020)

Transformers War For Cybertron Trilogy Season 1

Transformers fans will finally be getting what they’ve been requesting for a long time; a series focused entirely on the Transformers themselves and set on planet Cybertron (without any pesky humans bothering them).

Transformers War for Cybertron Trilogy Siege will feature six 22-minute-long episodes, but two more seasons will follow; the second of which will be subtitled Earthrise. Polygon Pictures are in charge of animation, while Rooster Teeth (RWBY) will be handling production.

The synopsis reads:

On their dying planet, the Autobots and Decepticons battle fiercely for control of the AllSpark in the Transformers universe’s origin story.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 (31 July 2020)

The Umbrella Acadamy 2

It looks like I was correct while theorizing that The Umbrella Academy Season 2 will be adapting more content from the second arc of the comic book; Dallas. Check out what I have to say about that here.

The synopsis for The Umbrella Academy Season 2 reads:

Five warned his family (so, so many times) that using his powers to escape from Vanya’s 2019 apocalypse was risky.

Well, he was right – the time jump scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas.

Over a three year period. Starting in 1960.

Some, having been stuck in the past for years, have built lives and moved on, certain they’re the only ones who survived.

Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which – spoiler alert! – turns out is a result of the group’s disruption of the timeline (déjà vu, anyone?).

Now the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused doomsday, put a stop to it, and return to the present timeline to stop that other apocalypse.

All while being hunted by a trio of ruthless Swedish assassins. But seriously, no pressure or anything.

Those are just several selected highlights from next month’s offerings of new TV series and movies on Netflix. Now you can plan your Netflix binge-fest for July 2020.
