We’ve Found Our New Batwoman

Ruby Rose made a shocking departure from her role as Kate Kane AKA Batwoman from the CW series of the same name in May 2020, but now the network has announced their replacement only two months after. Javicia Leslie will be the new Batwoman in the upcoming second season of the show, which is slated to premiere sometime in January 2021.
Speaking with Variety, Leslie said:
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.â€
However, Leslie won’t be recast as Kate Kane. Instead, she will portray a new character on the show named Ryan Wilder, who is described as likeable, messy, a little goofy and untamed.
With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Living in her van with her plant, she’s someone who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill with her bare hands.
Ryan is also described as the most dangerous type of fighter; highly skilled and wildly undisciplined, as well as being an out and proud lesbian, athletic, raw, passionate, fallible, and very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.
On Instagram, Rose praised the CW’s casting of Leslie as the next Batwoman.
Leslie previously starred on the CBS series God Friended Me, which aired for two seasons, the BET series The Family Business, and the film Always a Bridesmaid.
This will be interesting, considering that no character named Ryan Wilder exists in the comics, which means that this will be a new original character wearing the cowl of Batwoman. Would it turn out to be better than simply recasting the role of Kate Kane? Only time will tell.
