Every Batman fan worth their salt would be familiar with the iconic (or infamous) Death In The Family story arc by Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo from 1988, which resulted in the death of then-Robin Jason Todd.
What made the storyline shocking and memorable wasn’t Jason Todd’s brutal death at the hands of Joker via crowbar, but how it was decided upon. DC Comics actually launched a special campaign where fans could call a number to vote on whether Jason Todd would live or die.
Over a whopping 10,000 votes were counted, and a narrow majority was in favour of killing off the character. That wasn’t surprising, considering how unpopular Jason Todd was compared to the first Robin AKA Dick Grayson. DC Comics would eventually resurrect the character as the Red Hood in 2005 (which already received an animated movie adaptation with 2010’s Batman: Under The Red Hood).
Now, Warner Bros. has announced a new interactive animated movie adapting the aforementioned storyline; DC Showcase – Batman: Death In The Family. It’s slated to release on Blu-ray and Digital HD sometime in Fall 2020.
What’s unique about this interactive animated movie is that viewers will be able to change the comic book destinies of Batman, Robin and The Joker by choosing between different narrative choices to control the story, which can result in multiple endings.
This interactive element is clearly a call-back to the fan voting via telephone back in 1988. It’s a great concept to make the Death In The Family storyline feel fresh even for fans who are familiar with the source material.
DC Showcase – Batman: Death In The Family will essentially be a prequel of sorts to 2010’s Batman: Under the Red Hood and will feature several returning voice actors from that animated movie as well, including Bruce Greenwood as Batman, Vincent Martella as Jason Todd, and John DiMaggio as Joker.
The voice cast for the upcoming interactive animated movie also includes Zehra Fazal (Young Justice) as Talia al Ghul and Gary Cole (Veep) as both Two-Face and Commissioner Gordon.
Since it will be shorter than the usual full DC Comics animated movie, DC Showcase – Batman: Death In The Family will come with several other DC animated shorts to make up for that, which includes the previously-released Sgt. Rock, Death, Adam Strange, and The Phantom Stranger animated shorts.
