Sega Astro City Mini Console Lets You Play The Best Golden Axe
Sega recently announced its latest mini retro console: the Astro City Mini.
It’s obviously based after one of the best arcade cabinets that support ST-V and Naomi JAMMA boards, but in mini form. if you’ve played an awesome Sega arcade game or fighting game in the late 90s and early 2000s, it’s definitely on an Astro City. The Astro City Mini a more intricate button setup, functioning microswitches, and a headphone jack.
Most importantly, the Sega Astro Mini marks the first time Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder will be getting a home release. For those not tuned into 80s and 90s beat-em-ups, Golden Axe was a series of fantasy-based beat-em-ups that was average at best. At least until 1992 when Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder came out which improved the game tenfold.
The sequel boasts impressive sprites and graphics, a more variable cast that includes a female centaur and a midget imp who plants trees that bore health-replenishing fruit, 4-player co-op, and branching paths that add replayability to the beat-em-up formula. It was so good, Sega did not bother porting it and instead made a bunch of lesser Golden Axe games. What?
The mini console will be out in Japan later in 2020 for US$120 or so. We’re not sure if it will come out for Western markets, so you’ll need to ping your favourite parallel importers for this beauty. The current list of arcade games are below:
